For kids 3 years old to 6th Grade Jr. High & High School AWANA handbook memorization/service opportunity with our AWANA Cubbies, Sparks, and T & T Wednesday Evenings from 7 pm - 8:30 pm
What is Awana?
Awana is a Wednesday evening Bible-centered program for children ages 3 years old through 6th grade that focuses on learning God's Word in a fun atmosphere. Each week, Awana provides consistent, positive teaching and training that stresses strong moral and spiritual values. Our clubbers learn about the reality of God and the truth of the Bible. Incentives and awards are used to encourage children to progress.
Junior High and High School students come and help with the elementary-aged children as junior leaders. Then, in the last half hour of club, they recite the memory verses they have memorized as they work to complete handbooks and earn awards. We love having them there! Who to Contact?
Any questions on Awana, please contact Jeff or Sharon Reiss at 402-234-2316.
What is our Mission Statement?
To reach boys and girls with the gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him.
"Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
What is our Theme this Year?
This year our theme will be "Sword Fighting." Each week we will talk about a common area of temptation in the Christian life and will learn a verse to combat that temptation. Since the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, we'll talk about how to use this great weapon in our daily lives. When is Awana?
The 2009-2010 Awana program will begin September 9, 2010, and will last until April 28 , 2010. Please see the program calendar for days Awana will NOT meet and for theme nights. In case of bad weather, if the Omaha Public Schools cancel classes, there will be no AWANA that night.
What is a "red slip?"
When students complete 3 sections in their handbook (not 3 verses) they receive a red slip of paper that can be redeemed after club in the church kitchen for different small prizes. (This year we are trying to stay away from candy!) Red slips motivate the clubbers to keep moving throught their handbooks. They really like them! If a clubber can't say 3 sections during one club night, but can say 1 or 2 sections, he/she is given a yellow slip, which their leader keeps. The next week (and next week ONLY) they can complete their yellow slip by saying another one or two sections, totaling 3 sections. Then, the yellow slip can be redeemed for a prize just like a red slip. Any "leftover" sections a clubber says can be put on a new yellow slip to be filled the next week. What Can I Do to Help My Child Succeed in Awana?
Week by week, your children will grow spiritually as they learn Bible verses. Experience shows that encouragement from a parent will make a big difference in the spiritual growth of your children. Please set aside time each week to help your children study their handbooks.
Some ideas that have helped other parents include:
• One of the best items is the Awana Music Handbook Cassettes and CDs. This puts all the verses to a song that the children sing as they learn their verses. You can request these from the Registration table. As these are put together by the Awana main office, they must be ordered.
• Write their verse on a 3x5 card and place it on the bathroom mirror, kitchen table or car. Then practice the verse when you are in that room. T&T can order these on flashcards from the Registration table.
• Include 15 minutes of Awana in with their nightly homework.
Awana Clubs
Awana offers a series of clubs and programs, each geared to the needs of a particular age or grade:
3 - 4 year olds
Cubbies is the club for preschoolers during the two years prior to regular kindergarten (usually 3 and 4-year-olds - ideally potty trained). Cubbies is unique because it supports and maintains the parents as the primary source of spiritual nurturing by directly involving them in the teaching and learning process. Cubbies uses fundamental Awana elements of Bible memorization, handbooks, awards, and activities. Developmentally appropriate lessons and activities combine basic Bible truths with popular preschool concepts of colors, shapes, numbers, and letters.
Kindergarten - 2nd Grade
Sparksis the club for lively kindergartners, 1st and 2nd-graders. Each Club session is divided into three segments. In Game Time, Sparkies enjoy games played on the Awana Game Circle. During Handbook Time, clubbers complete handbook sections. During Council Time, Sparkies gather for their Bible lesson.
3rd - 6th Grade
Truth & Training is the club for 3rd and 6th-graders. Each Club session is divided into three segments. During Council Time, they gather for their Bible lesson. During Handbook Time, children earn awards for memorizing scripture and working in their handbook. In Handbook Time, we separate the boys and the girls. During Game Time, clubbers enjoy games played on the Awana Game Circle
